Am I Second?

Have you ever seen the People Are Awesome Video? It’s insane what people can do! People are awesome. And to prove that we think we are pretty awesome, studies show that humans take over 1 million selfies every day.

This week in Bible study, we take a look at John the Baptist. John dedicates his entire life to preparing for and promoting Jesus Christ. In John 3:22, Jesus spends time with His disciples, baptizing people in the Jordan River. By this time, John had a very popular ministry with many followers, so when Jesus came along, John’s disciples were not so stoked (John 3:22-36). Yet John responds to his followers in verse 30, “He (Jesus) must increase, but I must decrease” and continues to promote Jesus by saying, “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:36). After all of John’s lifelong hard work and dedication, he stays focused on his purpose. He knows it’s all about Jesus, and genuinely encourages his followers to follow after the true Savior.

John the Baptist’s lifestyle got me thinking: Do I self promote more than I promote Jesus? Is Jesus my life’s focus?Am I truly second? And do I know what it really means to be second?

This week I am writing “I Am Second” on my hand to remind myself to promote Jesus like John the Baptist did. I challenge you to do the same!
